{charity event}

a few weeks back, i was asked by THE PARTY GODDESS, to donate some items for a fundraiser being held by leona lewis for hopefield animal sanctuary in the UK.

with only about 24 hours notice, i went into a mad dash, along with my mother and 2 daughters, to get almost 400 pieces finished for the event!

unfortunately, after all that hard work, the post office didn't get my "express overnight guaranteed" package to the party goddess in time for the event....

BIG. HUGE. BUMMER.

even though it did not work out, i was reminded how my mom and my daughters could step up when i need them and without any hesitation or complaining :)

apparently, the charity event for the animal santuary went over well, and, while my items didn't get used for the purpose originally intended, i am told, they were used for charity, which makes me happy!

here are some of the things i have been making for the holidays, but have not had a chance to list in my shop for this season :(

i am going to take the day off {insert rolling of eyes and sarcastic huff here} to make fudge and cookies while i nurse my baby boy back to health and finish up gifts that i started adn more than likely will not be able to finish!

as i look out my window at the snow capped mountains and the green, yellow and orange colors of the valley i am so blessed to live in, i can't help but thank God for his many blessings and for the beautiful world He has created for us. although i try to celebrate thanksgiving everyday,{and don't always do a very good job of it} there is something so special about this time of year. the crisp, cold mornings, the changing scenery and the sudden need to bake and cook comfort foods for everyone i know, make this time of year like no other...

enjoy your weekend and remember to give thanks...always.

if you live in the area, a day-trip to bodie is definitely worth it, BUT watch out for ranger rick! he is a little grumpy :)

{and now for the venting...}

so, i know that purely by putting things on the internet, or offering them for sale, period, i am risking the chance of having my designs/ items/ ideas/ etc., copied. that being said, i had NO IDEA how blatant people could or would be about copying!

here's the deal. last night, after a look at a certain etsy shop from the UK,  {which shall remain un-named}, i came upon many items which bore an uncanny resemblance to many of my own items. while i can't really complain about the images used on the items, {it seems alice in wonderland is VERY popular these days ;)} which are not protected under copyright, what i do have a problem with is the way in which they are being used... i have worked very hard to come up with new, original designs and ways to use images that are flooding the market at the moment. when someone takes that hard work, copies it, then proceeds to pass it off as their own, it is very frustrating!

i have thought about contacting this person and confronting them with the facts, but i have decided it may only make matters worse.i will let it be, for now, and hope that this persons conscience will be enough to make them stop. if not, i know that all things happen for a reason and i will just keep working on ideas and designs, doing business honestly and with the best customer service i can give. i know that God will continue to bless my business. i know that, ultimately, i can't stop anyone from copying designs or ideas. what i can do, is continue to conduct business in a way that glorifies God with honesty, integrity and respect.

{ week of sadness, week of rest }

since i had computer problems last week, while we were away, i had to postpone the next few posts. i had wanted to post a day-by-day of our week, but the wifi was not cooperating. i will be posting all about last week over the next few days along with some creative things, i hope...please excuse the complete randomness and lack of direction! hope you enjoy the photos!

{july 20, 2010}

the last 2 weeks have been emotionally exhausting! kalie embarked an a last minute mission trip with the youth ministry at LifePoint on the 9th and is scheduled to be back in the states tomorrow; yippee! we had about 3 days to prepare for the trip...exciting, but scary and hectic at the same time.

we also lost both of our beloved family pets in the past 2 weeks. brodie, our lab, was hit by a car. he would have ben 15 this october. sadly, after brodie died, maggie, our border collie mix, never recovered. i never heard her bark again after that day. she stopped eating and playing. on saturday, we had to force feed her milk with a sippee cup. when we took her in to the vet that morning, we were told she had liver failure and by 2pm, she was completely unable to sit up or function at all. we lost her at around 5pm the same day.

although we are deeply saddened by our loss, we have soooo many great memories with our pets! they will be missed beyond belief.

{a last minute camping trip}

i am sitting at the door to our rv in foggy, cold, BEAUTIFUL, ano nuevo, ca. well, a little bit outside of año nuevo, but i don't really know the correct name for where we are. we will be here, exploring the awesomeness that God has created, for the week as well as healing, resting and spending time as a family. i decided to share a series of posts dedicated to what we find here and the surrounding communities. i am really excited! and now for the good stuff!

after having a week to relax and get some inspiration, i was able to get some new designs and ideas worked out. i'll be posting some photos as soon as i get samples made. for now, you can see what i have at the moment here. i have also decided to take an art class because i have so much free time on my hands... my teacher is the awesome ms. suzi blu. you can check her out here:

{ treasuries, new designs, SUPER easy recycled pencil can "tutorial" }

 

i have had a pretty busy week around the "studio". i have been working with a great customer on a bunch of special items for her wedding in the UK. these cones were born of a combination between party hats and confetti cones, which seem to be all the rage in wedding trends at the moment. i will probably offer a version of these in my shop soon....

this week, i FINALLY was able to make my own etsy treasury!!! for those of you who don't know what this is, it's a "treasury" of items you like on etsy that is posted for all to see. it has been very hard for me to get one as there are only a certain amount available at one time to be made. i got 2! in one day! oh joy :) it's the little things that make me happy!

so, a few weeks ago, i photographed a "tutorial" of how i make my recycled pencil cans. i have been holding off on sharing with you because i was afraid that i would offend some of you with how easy it is..... that having been said, i have decided to share. i know that some of my friends out there are, {how shall i say this }, creatively impaired? you know who you are! so this is for you :P

   
 
i got these cans of cinnamon balls at the dollar store at christmas time. the can itself was worth the dollar to me!

so, find yourself some paper that you like to start. measure your can inside the metal lip {if it has one}, and around. add about 1/2 inch to the measurement around to allow for overlapping the paper. 

trim your paper to the correct size to fit around the container. if your paper isn't long enough, either piece it together, or, try cutting it diagonally across so that you get a longer length. if you cut diagonally, try cutting a straight piece off of the corner first to give yourself a straight side to cut from.

 

once you have your piece cut, adhere it to the can. i used my handy-dandy ATG gun. it's a monster, but i love it!

   

make sure you have your paper lined up straight before you start wrapping it around the can or you may end up a little bit crooked at the end.

 now just decorate however you like :) i used ribbon and pompom trim. my favorite adhesive for ribbons and fabrics is Fabri-Tac, but i did use my ATG gun for the ribbon around the edges. then i just used the Fabri-Tac to finish the edges.

 

ta-da! a cute little cup for your scissors, pencils and things.

   

i have already confessed my obsession with peonies, but i wanted to share this groupo de photos, of my beloved bloom. the colors changed from day to day...so super dee duper cool!
